The image of the city of Uman from the pages of periodicals Kiev province from the 19th century to the beginning of the 20th century

Abstract: The article, based on the results of the analysis found in the Kyiv provincial newspapers «Zarya» (1880–1886), «Life and Art» (1894–1900) and «Kievskoe slovo» (1886–1905), shows the everyday life of the district city of Uman in the 19th century – at the beginning 20th century The study of the spatial dimension of the image of the city was carried out in accordance with the principles of historicism and scientific objectivity, in accordance with the principles of historical urbanism. The use of heuristic, system-forming, chronological approaches and methods made it possible to form a general idea about the city of Uman in the outlined chronological period. The scientific novelty is that the article presents for the first time the spatial image of Uman through the prism of periodical printed publications of the Kyiv province. In the course of the research of the information found in the newspapers, the most pressing issues of improvement and further development of the city were clarified. It was possible to find out and show the striking contrast of Umana at that time. On the one hand, this is the location of the majestic Sofiyivskyi Park and other monuments of garden and park art and architecture, and on the other – terrible unsanitary conditions and unorganized places of residence of city residents. Prospects for further studies are seen in the similar processing of such a historical source as a periodical press in relation to other county centers of the Kyiv province, which will highlight the city's history.
